Groundbreaking Bills for Clinical and Supervised Psychedelic Care

Despite introducing a Substitute Bill much reduced in scope and budget, our bill stalled in the Labor and Commerce Committee on February 21, 2025.

We look forward to picking up our bill next session, refining its scope, meeting with stakeholders, growing our coalition, and continuing to advance legislation for safe psychedelic care.

Original Bill

  • Permits adult only use, supervised by licensed professionals.
  • Not de-crim. No retail stores. No ability for people to consume recreationally.
  • Creates an opportunity for military veterans to find relief from PTSD.
  • Equity, costs, safety, and access were considered in all aspects of these bills.
  • Works in collaboration with the University of Washington.
  • Drafted to be a self-funding program.
  • Long term this program will save Washington State a substantial amount of money with reduced recidivisms, addiction, PTSD, and depression.
  • We hired the lawyers who wrote the Oregon and Colorado initiatives and had them fix prior shortcomings.
  • We consulted with and hired numerous experts, doctors, and practitioners to help design these bills.
  • We took best practices from around the world to develop world-class bills. Washington can be a leader for other states.

  • I believe veterans already have enough treatment options and they get all the care they need.

Research

  • I support more research, and these Bills help with that.
  • I like how they blocked all research on psychedelics in 1970, and I want that to continue.

Addiction

  • I want to help people dealing with addiction.
  • No, I love walking down 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle. The sights and smells add flavor to our city.

Depression

  • I want to support people dealing with depression.
  • That’s their problem, they need to snap out of it.

Big Pharma

  • I believe natural plant medicines can help people.
  • I only support things made by big pharma. More pills please.

Safety

  • When done in a clinical and supervised manner psilocybin is extremely safe.
  • Used improperly, psychedelics are risky, so we should ban all use.

Balanced Approach

  • I like this balanced approach legalizing clinical and supervised access to psilocybin.
  • I only like the extreme. Either we have full legalization of all drugs, or anyone who touches anything belongs in jail.

Market Protectionism

  • I’m on the same team as our veterans, first responders, and professional therapists.
  • But my friends make a lot of money from addiction misery and PTSD. What about market protectionism?

Timeline

  • So many positive experiences and hundreds of research studies. We’re ready. I want to start helping people sooner rather than later.
  • I’m very cautious. I never let my kids go trick or treating. New things scare me.

History

  • People have been using psilocybin, for healing, for thousands of years.
  • It feels like this is being rushed. Let’s slow things down. Big Pharma needs more time to patent a synthetic so they can charge us $1,000 per pill.

Costs and Taxes

  • This will save Washington State a ton of money by reducing long term costs related to PTSD, addiction, and depression.
  • I don’t care about long-term costs - we can always raise taxes.

Freedom of Choice

  • I believe we should give people freedom to choose their treatment options.
  • Freedom is overrated. The government knows best.

Core Belief

  • I believe we should help people.
